Poland up in arms about proposed Russian food inspections

Created: Thursday, October 11. 2007

The Polish Foreign Ministry has protested at new moves from Moscow which threaten more Polish exports of food products.

“This is blackmail, to which we cannot concede”, says Poland’s foreign minister Anna Fotyga on the announcement of further controls in Polish food processing facilities by Russia.

However, if |Poland withholds permission, more export bans to Russia may follow.

Moscow sent a letter to the Polish Ministry of Agriculture earlier this week, in which it announced that it wants to control facilities not yet under the Russian embargo. Anna Fotyga deems it outrageous.

“The rules of the game were laid down when the case of the Russian embargo on Polish food products was overtaken by the European Commission. Russia knows it all too well. Introducing an embargo and controls intended as blackmail are a breach of these international arrangements”, claims Fotyga.

The problem is, however, that Brussels gave Russia a go-ahead with the controls. “I am under the impression, that there must have been some miscommunication between the European Commission and Russian services”, said minister Fotyga, referring to the awkward situation.

Russia has banned meat products from being imported from Poland since late 2005.
